I have wanted to purchase a iBook for awhile, but they are a bit more spendy than the typical laptop. When my last laptop crashed, I decided that apple has a better operating system. Anyway, I got a new laptop with Vista installed. I have had more difficulties with Vista than I have with any other MS operating system! Trying to connect to the internet, running various programs, and all of the other novice computing tasks have become cumbersome. Does anyone have any tips for how to deal with the most frustrating version of Windows I have ever had the misfortune to interact with?

Well, you go to the doctor and say to him..'I don't feel good'...and he

says "obviously, or else you wouldn't be here'..."so tell me specifically what is your problem". So...? Frank

Uh Frank,
When Jester wrote:

I think he pretty much told you specifically what his problems are. I mean, does "Connect to the Internet, Run Various Programs" need further explanation or clarification, DUH.
Jester, I know where you're coming from on this one. I to have had to jump through hoops to get vista to run programs that worked fine under XP. But as usual, Microsoft wants to play big brother again with software apps.
I had to go find versions of software designed specifically ( As Frank So Eloquently Likes To Refer To Things ) to run under Vista. Examples follow:
Acronis Disk Director (still won't work under Vista) Nero Power DVD Universal Shield (still won't work under Vista)
So I essentially had to spend more dollars to upgrade my software just so it would run on this over hyped Vista B***S***.
This is the last time I'll ever go through this much trouble again with Microsoft's crappy Operating Systems because in all honesty, I'm really not impressed with Vista at all. My next computer will be an IMAC.

If you have defined needs and do not mind spending twice what the generally garbage grade Intel hardware is worth in a Mac then at this point in time the Mac is a more stable platform than Vista. That part is undeniable. The key is "defined needs" as Mac software, particularly software compiled native for the Mactel platform, is a minimalist proposition. Unfortunately the hardware components in, for example, a Mac Mini, are actually from the absolute rock bottom dregs of the Intel shelf (1.83 ghs processor or less!) yet sell for the ultra premium price of around $1k. Without mouse or keyboard. Going up to the meat of the Mac line-up you are getting at best medium grade Intel hardware, with low end video cards, at more than twice what that configuration would cost from any Wintel vendor. At the top end of the Mactel line-up the situation is a mixed bag of far from cutting edge and crap hardware all vended at more than twice what a better system would cost from a Wintel shop. Insanity. Every time I price out a Mac I want to vomit. I have never seen a worse run company.

Oh, so now it's Dr. Frank. Will this silliness never end? Going to Dr. Frank for answers is like going to a MVP asking for advice on Linux. <snort> Dr. Frank! Hilarious!

What's the spec on your laptop? Which Vista flavor are you running? How much RAM does your laptop have?

I think Vista is a work in progress. I find that in an effort to think of everything, the programers have encumbered the program with two many thoughtful touches and it is slugish. Also my Vista has tended to slow down since I first installed it. Kind of like a cholesterol problem. I agree, Apple has a much better operating system. Been good since I first used it in 1982. I use them all though, even Linux. Variety is the spice!

I absolutely concur it's a hunk of sh*t right now. We can only help you if you give us details and specific error messages you are getting.

It's not so much an error message as it is slower than molassas in Barrow, Alaska in February (I'm from Alaska...molassas doesn't move very quickly). I have had to reset my wireless modem or the computer in order to connect to the internet. Programs that I had installed with XP are now freezing or "not responding" constantly.
I have the Vista Home Basic with 512 MB SDRAM.
I use my laptop for school, home, and business associated travel. It is imperative that it be a dependable machine. Unfortunately the commercials about Mac and the PC are ringing more true with each passing day...
