Can't say much without seeing the exact error message. Is it crashing before you even enter an account? Turn off email scanning in your ant-virus. Turn off any anti-spyware programs. Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM fjsmjs.com "RLINSOCAL"

Windows mail could not be started. Make sure your disc is not full. or that you are not out of memory.(0x80004005) and Windows mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is Windows defender spyware? Does it need to be uninstalled? RLINSOCAL

Blow away the message stores and start WinMail empty Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored separately.
Do the following:
1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options. a) click on the Views tab b) Select "Show hidden files and folders" c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" d) click APPLY then OK. e) Close Control Panel
2) From Windows Mail a) Click on the Tools menu b) click on Options c) click on the Advanced tab d) click the Maintenance button e) click the Store Folders button. f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be something like: C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail g) close Windows Mail
3) Open Windows Explorer
When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account name. Click it to collapse it.
For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over the element in question.
Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it to expand it.
You should see something like "Local Disk (C:)"
Click on the triangle to expand it.
Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.
Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.
Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.
Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it. Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.
Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail. Click on it.
In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (C:)"
Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the Windows Mail folder. Drag it to the "Local Disk (C:)" and release the mouse button. Select MOVE Here.......
Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there. Give it time.
Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the moved one in the C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.
Now start Windows Mail. It will be empty but that's no biggie.
Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old Sent. Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.
Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.
In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the triangle to expand it.
Locate the Inbox folder. In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails. Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.
Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.
Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

START | Run type in regedit Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Mail Look for the Store Root value That's the location of the messages stores. Store Folders button reads that info.

You probably need to set the permissions on the message store folder so all users can read write to it and then it should work okay. steve "Ray"

Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance | Store Folder will tell you the location of the store folder. The paths are hidden. Once you find that folder (directory) then right click on it and go to Properties | Security | Edit and there let Users (or at least yourself as a user) have full control. Then see if that fixes things. steve "Ray"

I've been reading all of your problems with Mail 7 and I have to addmit this new Mail really seems to suck. I also have tried everything that has been posted to cure the problem of: "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mail mailbox data is currently being used by another program, such as a virus scanner. Close the program or wait for it to complete its operation, then open Windows Mail again. (0x800C0155, 2) - Windows Mail - Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized." I have reinstalled Mail 7 twice now and it works fine till I change the "Mail Store" location. Then it starts crapping out as stated above. Now, my mail store, is on a external drive so I don't loose important data with clients. Also this new Mail 7 Stationary doesn't seem to work when I try to create my old Company Mail... If any one seems to know a work around for this I'd appreiate.. There is a way around Mail 7 not opening... But the rub is that you have to have Administrator Rights... Right Click on the Mail 7 shortcut and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR... Another window will open "SELECT ALLOW Unidentified Publsher" and your mail should open just fine...

I bugged this and they still used the stupid erroneously non-factual error messages. I just fixed the stuck outbox message problem. Seems they could do some programming for the users instead of for themselves. Just because they work for Microsoft doesn't mean they have to aim for the mediocre. steve "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM"

Comments on my experience - found a solution - your thoughts? First of all, let me say that Mr Cochran and to some extent DGuess deserve applause for continuing to read and respond to the many many comments made from all the users you are having the same problem, but who have not done their homework and read through the threads for advice. Thank you both. Like "Jay", I also read all the threads and descriptions of problems. My trouble started when I tried to point my stored messages to a different folder other than the default "C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail". Also, I should point out the following facts" 1. I am the administrator on the family computer, using Vista Home Premium 2. Following the advice from MS on installation, I set up a USER without admin rights for general use. The various family members use this account. 3. So, I have two USERS on the Log In Page - "Family, and "Wingnut" 4. Wingnut is the admin (some names have been changed to protect the idiot) 5. On the admin account, I set up WM (Windows Mail) for my POP3 Yahool mail. 6. I changed the destination of where I want to store messages to a folder in the admin account in documents. I labeled the folder "yahoo mail". So far, so good. 7. I logged off the admin account and logged on to the family account. 8. I set up WM successfully, and changed the destination of where I wanted to store messaged to THE SAME FOLDER IN THE ADMIN ACCOUNT in documents. This is when WM fought back. 9. I only want ONE folder where I can find ALL my locally saved email when I use WM whether I am logging in to the "family" page or the "admin" page. Follow me? So... back to my experience. Launching WM from the admin account is good. But, trying to launch WM in the Family account, I was getting the two error messages :
| QUOTE | | 1) "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to open the Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mail mailbox data is currently being used by another program, such as a virus scanner. Close the program or wait for it to complete its operation, then open Windows Mail again. (0x800C0155, 2) Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized." |
I tried all the advice presented by Mr. Cochran and DGuess. I turned off MS Defender, I turned off OneCare, I changed permissions to "everybody get naked" Nothing worked. THEN... I launched WM from the Start-Programs (NOT from the quickstart menu or the 'pin to file menu' link), and I started it as "run as administrator" - a right click selection. Then WM launched. I haven't moved all the filed back into the account yet, that's next. So, my question is this: Can WM have ONE local stored message folder for two USER ACCOUNTS so that all locally stored messages are stored in one folder? I expect I will have to make sure my naming of folders is exactly the same for both accounts. "Jay" wrote:
| QUOTE | I've been reading all of your problems with Mail 7 and I have to addmit this new Mail really seems to suck.
"DGuess" wrote: Blow away the message stores and start WinMail empty Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database.
"RLINSOCAL" Windows mail could not be started. Make sure your disc is not full. or that you are not out of memory.(0x80004005) and Windows mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is Windows defender spyware? Does it need to be uninstalled? RLINSOCAL |
