I have Vista Home Premium 64bit installed but not yet activated and some of the hardware I have does not have 64bit drivers, so I have some questions about Virtual PC 2007. I know that in order to run Virtual PC I will would have to get Vista Business or Ultimate but what I don't know is if the Windows XP Pro OEM that is on my OLD machine (that I am planning to scrap when this new machine does everyting I want it to do) would install and activate on this Virtual PC?
If not, then the cost of Vista upgrade and a new copy of Windows XP Pro almost equals the cost of the hardware I want to run. :-( I do not want to keep the old machine just to run Windows XP PRO.
Switching to 32bit Vista is not really a solution for me as some of the software I have just plain rejects Vista and I don't see that being solved soon either.

Because it's an OEM, it will not.

If you can't run your existing software on 32-bit Vista, why do you think it would work on 64-bit Vista? Have you tried installing it (and/or running it) in compatibility mode? Have you approached the vendors involved to see if they have a Vista-compatible version?
I don't think Virtual PC runs in 64-bit mode anyhow, and may not even run on a 64-bit Vista.

If I had a NEW Windows XP OEM that has never been opened would it install and activate in this Virtual PC?

I had already given up on my software which would not install under Vista and just looking at getting some hardware working.

The requirements do say Virtual PC will run on Vista Business or Ultimate, it does not say anything about 32 or 64 bit. I guess you can't go wrong assuming it does not run on Vista 64 bit.

it costs nothing to try. VPC does not support 64 bit guests. but does run on 64 bit host. so if your xp is 64 bit, forget it. go to VMWare.

It probably would, unless it's locked to a certain type of mainboard, so be careful with discs that have a manufacturer name on them other than 'Microsoft'.

The OEM XP Pro will install. It *may* also activate .. especially if it is at least three or four months from the last activation. If I remember correctly, XP activation *resets* every so many months. Whether you are *entitled* or not to run said copy, I don't know: some countries yes, some countries maybe no.

Technically the license agreement for an OEM copy of XP is non-transferrable.
