Sorry can't find it at Microsoft (all hush hush), but it's all over the news nets. I know it's a rumor, but it's a pretty strong one.
C/Net, ZDnet, Computer World, etc. Google Vista Sp1 & you'll see. This is NOT a preview of Windows Vista SP1. It is a third party site that has just gathered together all of the currently available hot fixes that are out for Windows Vista. This is not the only thing SP1 will be. You should not download fixes from any site other then Microsoft.com or via Windows Update in the OS. You cannot guarantee what these files are or guarantee their stability or suitability for use in your environment (as some of the fixes are "privates" not usually made available to the general public. This all reminds me of a big issue I had a couple of years ago when I rubbished some third party who was touting a "preview" of XP SP3. labnol.blogspot.com/2005/10/microsoft-avoid-windows-xp-sp3-preview.html groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/msg/b3e9f19f5d306677?dmode=source It is also a bit of a scam to get you to sign up to their forum etc. I would say well clear of this until the Official Microsoft SP1 for Windows Vista. Rumors suggest SP-1 will probably be out the end of the year coinciding with the release of Longhorn Server. Whatever this is, it can not be genuine. First, if it was, the 3rd party download is illegitimate since Microsoft is the only legitimate source to control reliability and prevent tampering. It may be a 3rd party creation claiming to be SP-1. If that is the case, this is even more dangerous since some will believe their computer is protected with SP-1. When SP-1 comes out in Beta or otherwise, Microsoft will be the only source. Any other download source is suspect at best and potentially dangerous at worst. Stay AWAY from anything like this that is not directly from Microsoft. Jupiter Jones [MVP] www3.telus.net/dandemar dts-l.org "brink"

Using reliability and Microsoft in the same sentence. You daft man? If Windows was anything close to reliable, there would never be any need for any service packs. |

"You daft man?" Obviously not, but your need to throw insults at any excuse demonstrates your inability to read a post with content if it interferes with your preconceptions. "...there would never be any need for any service packs." Then going by your description, no operating system ever has been and never will be "reliable". All OSs need updates of one type or another. Whether some OSs call them "service packs" or not has little relevance. Microsoft Windows has proven very reliable for me. Again, you ignore the context of my statement. Here it is for you since you missed it the first time: "Microsoft is the only legitimate source to control reliability and prevent tampering." Or do you suggest getting Microsoft updates from disreputable sources? The best source for an update is ALWAYS from an authorized source and Microsoft IS the ONLY authorized source for Microsoft Updates. And I assume you can name an operating system that did not receive various patches and updates during its lifetime ? No, thought not. (and haven written software and operating system components for mission critical systems [military] I can say that even the best written and most robust systems today (robust or a large number of people could die), still receive service updates and patches to improve the system during their life time) Mike Brannigan |

There are no public official release dates for the SP1 for Windows Vista. It is assumed (by many) to coincide with the release of Windows Server 2008 which is currently scheduled for H2 2007. Continue to use Windows Update to keep your Vista install patched. Mike Brannigan "Sharon T"
