Has anyone else had issues with the Recycle Bin? I just emptied it of 5 items totaling about 5k (they were all desktop shortcuts)...and it took at least 5 minutes to finish.
And this is on top of Vista taking at least 10 minutes to reboot.

By any chance is this PC a new one with Vista preinstalled? If so, then you probably have a lot of crapware from the manufacturer that you probably don't need. What antivirus package are you using, if any?

Not seen this with the recycle bin in particular, but the performance of Windows Explorer in Vista is absolutely awful at times so this doesn't seem that unusual, I'm sad to say.

Nope....I upgraded XP Pro to Vista Business.
XP, of course, was lightning-quick (in terms of overall system response, boot-up time, etc. And yes, delete 5K from the Recycle Bin took...oh....a millisecond?
I've also been having to agonize through 5-10 minute reboot times. Needless to say, I never reboot my machine unless I absolutely have to.
Now, I don't have a state-of-the-art machine; it's a 2gig centrino laptop with 1gig memory, and a 2gig USB stick I'm using with ReadyBoost. But once Vista finally decides to load up, everything works smoothly (even with the Aero graphics turned on).
So I really don't understand why the heck It would take 10 minutes to boot. Guess I should track down all the garbage that's being loaded at startup (including the Sidebar). Of course, this still doesn't explain the Recycle Bin issue.
In closing, I'd like to say: aaaaaaarrrrgh!!!!
Thanks, Bryan Green

Upgrade Vista installations seem to have more problems than clean Vista installations. I did a clean Vista installation on a freshly partitioned hard disk and my boot up and shut down times are at least ten times faster than I had with XP.

I saw slow boot times and file deletions and moving when I changed the settings for the virtual memory. I was annoyed that the pagefile.sys file was nearly 4gb in size so I went and set the system virtual memory to a specified size that I chose. As soon as I set it back to the default of "Automatically manage paging file for all drives" everything became super fast. Still, the pagefile.sys file is huge but the performance hit is worse.

Yeah, one of these days when I have a couple of days to do a clean install, re-install alllllll my applications and re-license/re-activate allllll my software, I'm sure I'll have a much speedier machine....I just can't bring myself to do it quite yet. *shiver*

Yeah, I think you'll be much faster if you did a clean install rather than an upgrade. You also might want to check any XP system-level programs you have, such as firewall, antivirus, etc...a lot of what runs on XP doesn't do so well on Vista unless you get an update.
