Windows Firewall will not enable. Here is what is going on:
Windows Firewall - "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended setting to protect your computer." "Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates."
Security Center - "Windows Firewall is turned off." "Security Center can’t turn on Windows Firewall."
Services - There is no Windows Firewall Service
I have performed a Google search with little or no relevant results.
Performed SFC /scannow. No integrity issues.

The service is "Base filtering engine"
Here's a link that tells you all about Vista's services & which one it recommends to disable :
'SpeedyVista.com - Windows Vista Services - Summary/Details Page' (speedyvista.com/services.html)
Hope this helps, Shawn

Disabling the above service did nothing for my Firewall issues. The Windows Firewall service is not even listed in the services mmc. Michael D. Alligood, MCSA, MCDST The I.T. Classroom - theitclassroom.com/ CertGuard - certguard.com

Sorry Michael,
Don't disable the "Base filtering engine". This is your Firewall service. Make sure that it is Started & on Automatic.
I was referring to the link so that you could see what all the services in Vista were for.
Sorry, Shawn

No worries. I knew what it was. I have tried everything listed on the internet and resource kit to try and solve this issue, but nothing worked. I also ran SFC command as well. The Windows Firewall service was never listed in the Service menu. As a last resort, I performed a repair installation. After words, everything returned to normal. The Windows Firewall service is now available and the service is started and running normally.
Being a 13 year desktop support specialist, I wish I could have found the resolution for this problem. I do not like performing a reinstall to fix issues such as this. However, I researched everything dealing with troubleshooting the Windows Firewall server to no avail.
I am considering this thread closed. However, I someone out there was run across this issue and found a resolution please email me. I would love to find out what exactly went wrong and the solution to solving it. Michael D. Alligood, MCSA, MCDST The I.T. Classroom - theitclassroom.com/ CertGuard - certguard.com

Actually the Base Filtering Engine (bfe) is a system service sitting below Windows Firewall which provides interfaces for lots of different firewalls, anti-virus, etc. The Windows firewall service itself is just Windows Firewall (MPSsvc).
