I purchased Ultimate and have been running the 32bit version. I just did a complete system backup and want to reinstall Vista using 64bit. I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing and want to make sure that I can reinstall all the data I just backed up. Can anyone help?

Long story short, there isn't an upgrade path from 32bit to 64bit, or the reverse. In other words, a complete system backup won't help you.
As far as data goes, you can copy it manually to a safe place (removable drive, secondary drive, DVD, etc) and then do a clean install of 64bit, then go back and install your apps and restore your data.
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Hi,
Rather than the backup utility, simply copy data files you don't want to lose to removable media like a USB thumb drive or CD/DVD writable disk.

I could be wrong but don't you need the "Hardware" to be 64 bit for you to be able to install Vista Ultimate 64?
Cheers,

Yes. I think it's fair to assume he has the capability to run a 64-bit OS at all, otherwise the entire question doesn't make sense.

you would use a tool like Boot-It to create you another C: partition, and do a clean install to that. You will have to reinstall programs, preferably the 64-bit versions.
