I am sending documents via email (have been doing this for years without any problem) to my work computer but cannot open them becasue the .doc has an x after it. I have windows vista and a brand new Acer computer at home. How do I undo this so I can open the documents at work?

The .docx extension means it was saved in the new Office 2007 format. I understand there are plug-ins that will let earlier versions of Office or Word read the .docx files but not edit them. The trick is, at home, when saving, make sure you save it in the earlier Word format. There's a drop-down list asking you what type of file you want to save it as. When you save in the earlier Word format, it will be saved as ..doc and not .docx. Then you should be able to open those when you send them to your office. "pd"

Why can't you just rename the file so that the extension is .doc? |

The file format .docx is new to Office 2007. You may read about it here. msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms406049.aspx You can use the free converter to view these documents in earlier versions of Office. You may read about it here. office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) Quote from George Ankner: If you knew as much as you think you know, You would realize that you don't know what you thought you knew! Open them in Winzip or similar if you fancy editing them that way ;-) As Richard said you need really the Compatability pack on your work PC or Office 2007. |

If there are features with Office 2007, and you rename the file to .doc, you might corrupt the file when opening in Office 2003. If you don't corrupt the file, any new Office 2007 features will not appear in Office 2003. "Malcolm H"

I don't have Word 2007, but I suspect that it has the ability to "Save As" to an earlier version. "pd"

Corrupted or not corrupted, any new Office 2007 features will not appear in Office 2003. Ronald Sommer

I have tried what others have stated by resaving my word documents to an older version but I still cannot open them at work however when I make a copy of the converted files and down load them at work I can open them perfectly. Due to this finding I feel it is a ISP problem but I don't know where to get an answer. At the foot of Mt. Fuji "Neil Harley" wrote:
