Hi! I just recently started to get the logon Vista Mail window asking for username & password everytime I run Windows Mail. This happened to me today, after a long time I've installed Vista x64 Business. Even when checking "Remember Credentials" or "remember password" in Tools/accounts/properties", I get the same logon window everytime I run Mail.

Try removing the mail account, closing and reopening WinMail and then add it back again. steve "xumaxer"

Turn off email scanning in your antivirus and then try Steve's advice. What anti-virus? Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM Do not send mail.

Read oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Then uninstall your antivirus program, reboot, and try Windows Mail again. If it still won't save the password, create a new email account with the same settings as the existing account, then delete the existing account. restart Windows Mail, and it should work now. After you get your email working again, you will need to install a non-intrusive antivirus program such as the free AVG or Avast. Whichever antivirus program you use, be sure to NOT enable its email scanning option. Gary VanderMolen "Tom G"

I don't use any anti-virus software. I had previously thought about deleting and reinstalling the accounts, so I tried it. Same problem. This problem is deeper, maybe in the registry. I am going to explore removing and then reinstalling Windows Mail. Tom "Gary VanderMolen"

It is not possible to remove or reinstall Windows Mail. Assuming that you have no existing email to keep, you can have it regenerate most of its structure from scratch by deleting this directory: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail Gary VanderMolen "Tom G"

To continue on... I have a XP machine that I have hooked up. OE6 works just fine. I have two email accounts. Both downloaded just fine. This problem is in Windows Mail. To be expected with anything new. I await the solution from MSFT. Tom "Gary VanderMolen"

I deleted the Windows Mail folder, then restarted Mail and reentered the account info. I can now get my mail without having to enter username and password. This machine is only 10 days old. I don't want to have to do this every 10 days or so. I am going to poke around in the registry to see what I can find. Tom "Tom"

Thanks for the feedback. Normally, password corruption is caused by an overly aggressive antivirus program, but you said you don't use an AV. What about an anti-spam or anti-malware program? I wonder if Windows Defender can cause this. Gary VanderMolen "TomG"

I was grasping at straws. I have no evidence that Defender causes any problems. I'm going on three weeks without a WinMail problem, knock on wood. I run Defender (which is a Vista default) and Computer Associates antivirus with the mail scan feature turned off. Four weeks ago, when I got the stuck message in my outbox I was running Microsoft Windows OneCare, which I have dumped. Gary VanderMolen "TomG"

I am not blaming Defender. I've been running it on XP since it first came out. The problem here is that there only a few guys who know the internals of Windows Mail and, unless they become aware of a problem, the problem will continue. As I said before, this machine is only a couple of weeks old. If the problem reappears, I will post a new item titled Login username and password. Tom "Gary VanderMolen"
