I am unable to get my Xbox 360 wireless controller to connect to the wireless receiver under Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. The wireless controller is using a standard battery pack. My PC is running a eVga's Nvidia 680i motherboard, which is controlling the USB ports. The wireless receiver plugs directly into one of the motherboard's rear USB ports. If I power the controller on before I turn on (or reboot) the computer, the controller will connect when Vista boots, but I am unable to play game with the controller. Launching Solitaire, for example, causes the joystick to connect and the green light highlights the top left quadrant of the menu button (1). This sounds good, but I can not control the game... If I boot up Vista then turn on the controller, all four lights on the menu button lights blink and never stop. At this point the controller is not listed in the "Game Controllers" control panel. I can re-sync the controller to the wireless receiver, but the menu button lights still blink and the controller will still not show up in the "Game Controllers" control panel. The very first time I installed this controller, I was able to play solitaire with it. After a reboot, nothing. I may have used a different USB port when I moved the receiver to the other side of my desk. Returning the receiver on the original USB port doesn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, If you run msconfig from the search box, is the xbox receiver program enabled on the startup tab? Is the receiver's light lit when the system finishes loading? Dumb question perhaps, but have you tried changing batteries? Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - rickrogers.org "Autobot5150"

The xbox receiver is enabled in msconfig. The light on the receiver is green and I did try different batteries. :( I returned the controller to the store and purchased a new one. The new controller seemed fine at first, but the same problem is back. "Rick Rogers" wrote:

Hello, I have already installed this software, Xbox 360 Accessories Software 1.1 32-bit for Windows Vista. In fact, this is the only driver software that I have installed & un-installed & re-installed. I never installed the software that came on the CD. As a side note. I can occasionally get the controller to work, but when I play Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six VEGAS the controller will not work, even though it will work with Solitaire and it does work with the wired 360 controller. The menu button highlights the #1 position (green light at the top left of the menu button), but no game control... Thank you for your assistance. "Rick Rogers" wrote:

Hi, That game is listed as "Supported OS:Windows XP (only)" here: store.ubi.com/item.jsp?item=68321&category=PC So it doesn't surprise me that the controller won't work for it. As to the general problem, if you've already uninstalled/reinstalled the software, then I would next remove and reinstall all USB devices via device mangler, er manager. Hi, I'm brand new to this forum and joined specifically for the sake of solving this problem. I am having the EXACT same problem as the original poster (controller works at first then stops working, and no amount of install and reinstall fixes it). I have Vista 32-bit and have the most up to date version of the controller and receiver software. Any help would be appreciated (I have tried the suggested things already). What processor do you have? That will tell you what it is capable of. The Core 2 Duo, Athlon 64, and some P4's are 64 bit capable. Dustin Harper dharper vistarip.com VistaRIP.com | Vista Resource & Information Page "guitardude"

I've just bought a 4GB flash drive to use as a ReadyBoost drive. However, it occurred to me that putting the swap file on might be a better idea. It's going to be mounted inside the case of the PC, so not easily removable. Any comments?

I just started to have this same issue when I got back on sunday. I installed 8gbs of Corsair XMS2 ram, and teh system started to give me the nvlddmkm.sys error and then BSOD, etc. I did a memory test and everything checked out fine. What I have found out is that if you have SLI enabled it will crash the system. But when I disable it I will still get the error until I turn off Windows Aero theme. Then the system seems to run fine. Up until now I have had no issues. I have even reinstalled the display drivers, moved the nvlddmkm.sys file to different directories that people have said works, but still nothing. I even updated my BIOS to version "FF" Is there a fix for this, or have I just blow $2600 on a junk computer? -Thor Specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ BE 8 GB Corsair xms2 PC2-6400 Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit Dual EVGA 8800GTS 640 MB Graphic Cards GIGABYTE M57SLI-S4 Motherboard Antec 900 case with Antec 850watt

You can go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. Select the disk, and initalize it and format it in there. Dustin Harper dharper vistarip.com VistaRIP.com | Vista Resource & Information Page "JosephMo"

Thanks. That took care of the problem. It seems to me though as if this is something that Windows Explorer, or the Properties Page, or the Device Manager should have allowed me to take care of (or should have recognized that I added a disk and provided an option to format it). Joseph

Hi, I have the same problem with my lacie 500gig drive on Vista Pro. However, I could not find the file USBSTOR.INF on my computer. Where can I get this file? Thanks Rolf "Ali R" wrote:
| QUOTE | So I FINALLY solved my problem! I sent a request to the HD manufacturer, Lacie, and they solved my problem on their first shot!! I was rather impressed, seeing how much back & forth was going on here. Anyway, in my case, the problem was a missing usbstor.inf file under the C:\Windows\Inf folder. I just searched my computer for it, copied to the Windows\Inf directory, and voila, everything works! Even all the USB flash drives that weren't working initially are all functional now. If anyone else is having a similar problem with their USB devices, I suggest they try this quick fix first. Ali "Richard Urban" wrote: What services have you possibly turned off to "save" resources? Have you disconnected all other USB devices and then tried your USB drive in various other ports, rebooting in between tests? I have a scanner that is "very" selective about which USB port it is connected to. It is NOT Vista! It is the hardware implementation of the M/B and the ports interaction with Vista. What works with XP had to be changed physically to function with Vista. Is it a Vista problem in my case? NO! NO! NO! I have another computer with the same M/B that does ***NOT*** exhibit the same problems. - this on a clean install. On one computer the scanner works in a certain port. On the other computer - nothing. I shut down both computers and switched M/B's. The problem transferred to the computer that showed no problem previously. Yes. It took me a few hours to perform this check but no big deal. I am retired and have plenty of free time. On further checking I found that there were vastly different resistance readings from that particular USB ports pins - to ground - when the two computers were compared electrically. There is so much you can do in troubleshooting. That is why a good tech gets more per hour than a poor tech (usually). (-:
Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) "Ali R" Oridnarilly I'd agree with you to some extent. However I experience the same problem when I plug in a large number of different USB flash drives. Of the 3 flash drives I own, my Vista only recognizes one. All 3 were detected with no additional drivers back when I had XP. In addition, I've tried all of the flash drives my friends own and NONE of those have worked either. From the no name brands, right up to the Kingston and Sony. For that reason, I don't think it's a problem with my HD itself, but rather something related to Vista's interraction with the USB jacks. Ali "Richard Urban" wrote: Gee. Why not just get an external drive case that will use the default drivers in Vista correctly. All cases are NOT equal! The electronic IDE to USB interface within the case may not be designed correctly or may, in fact, be defective. I have an external Maxtor that will not work with Vista. I'll be damned if I am going back to XP because of it. I just use my 500 gig Seagate hard drive that is mounted in my Adaptec external box. I have not found a single instance where it will not function as it is supposed to.
Regards, Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User (For email, remove the obvious from my address) "Ali R" Yes, I tried connecting directly to the computer. Also, that hotfix you suggest is not intended for the problem that I'm experiencing. I did see a hotfix for the problem that I am experiencing, but that also did not work. Other suggestions?? Really on the brink of switching back to XP if I can't resolve this soon. "JW" wrote: Are you connecting the USB drives directly to computer or to a USB hub? If not it may be the HUB driver that is the problem. Also you might try the following Hot fix. support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b936003
"Ali R" I tried the hotfix. When I plug in my USB HD, I no longer get the message that driver is not found, checking online for a driver etc. HOWEVER, the device is still NOT RECOGNIZED by Vista. In Device Manager, it still has a yellow caution symbol next to the device, and the drive does not show up in My Computer. Any other suggestions? I'm seriously considering downgrading back to Windows XP as a result of this. This is NOT the first time that this has happened. I have the same problem with MANY of the USB Flash Drives I use too, rendering them useless to me. Not sure what the problem is, but this is definitely not acceptable from an OS. As much as I like the new look & feel, and new functionality of Vista, I'm really left with no choice but to go back to XP so that I can use my peripherals etc., unless there is still a way to fix this situation. Even the flash drives belonging to my colleagues don't get recognized by Vista on my machine. I too have Vista Ultimate and am experiencing the same issues. Please Help!! Ali R

Did you create a partition and format it with the Disk Management tool and/or any tool the drive might have come with? Yes, new drives must be partitioned and formatted before Windows can use them. Thanks. That took care of the problem. It seems to me though as if this is something that Windows Explorer, or the Properties Page, or the Device Manager should have allowed me to take care of (or should have recognized that I added a disk and provided an option to format it). | QUOTE | Hi, I have the same problem with my lacie 500gig drive on Vista Pro. However, I could not find the file USBSTOR.INF on my computer. Where can I get this file? Thanks Rolf "Ali R" wrote: So I FINALLY solved my problem!
My computer (HP m9000t) freezes up after coming out of sleep mode. I have tried turning off sleep / hybrid sleep / hibernate, but the computer still goes into "sleep" of some kind. When it comes out of sleep, I can hear a whirling sound, which could be the harddrive starting up, but moments later it sounds like it spins down and stops, and then the whole computer freezes up, and I have to turn it off and then turn it back on in order to make it work again. I've tried to make it (using power options) so that the harddrive does not power down, but that doesn't appear to do anything either, because the drive still turns off when the computer sleeps. Before this problem developed, I was having problems with the Media Center remote not working after sleep, and was also having problems with the usb ports, and the sound turning off. Something else was turning off too, because I could hear the Windows "clunk" sound that indicates that something is not working, but I haven't figured out what item was involved in that issue. On top of all of this Media Center has stopped working, and to make it work I have to delete a db file to get it opperating again. My other Vista computer (HP m8067c) works like a gem, but this new one (HP m9000t) is nothing by a constant hassle now. It was great for the first month, but now nothing works right. Of course all of the small issues of two weeks ago (remote not working, etc.) are irrelevant now that the whole system freezes up. I contacted HP and they said that I should do a system recovery, but that has not worked either. As it stands now, I simply turn the computer off whenever I leave it, because otherwise I have to do a reboot (turn the computer off and on) whenever it comes out of sleep mode. I dread sleep mode. I was afraid of something like that. I've had little luck with that whole "Upgrade" thing with Vista. "Colin Barnhorst"
| QUOTE | Vista does not have a repair install. In Vista you must do an in-place upgrade which unfortunately is not always possible (with x86 upgrade edition product keys, for example) if the OS becomes inoperable. "Xenomorph" With Windows XP, the biggest issue was the hard drive controller chipset when moving from one motherboard to another. If drivers are loaded for an Intel chipset, and you swap in a VIA motherboard, you'd get a STOP error with "Inaccessible_Boot_Device" during boot. The trick is to switch the hard drive controller chipset to Generic/Microsoft first, and then swap out the motherboard. This *might* work with Vista, but I have never tried it (yet). I've done it several times with XP though. If it does not work, a "Repair Install" may be all that is needed. There is no loss of data with a Repair Install.
"Altero" Is there any procedure or trick to have the possibility to change motherboard with different chipset, without reinstalling Vista? Thank you very much indeed!

I'm using a Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 with an HP dv2500 laptop, Vista home premium. At first it stopped the screen saver coming in when it should, so I installed the "non-human input filter" patch/thingy as advised. Then the latest Vista updates wiped it out. Next advice I found said to plug in the receiver and let Windows Update install the non-human input filter. I did that, but now the mouse is slow and erratic, also dropping lots of clicks and scroll wheel gestures. It seems like too many human inputs are getting filtered out too. I've gone back to my good old long-tailed rodent, but I would like a solution for the free-range beastie. Steve.

Ok, maybe I need new DVD burner maybe not. For some reason I can burn to +RW but when I try to burn -R it says rude words. I used to be able to burn to -R, even the same brand (Pheonix) that is now not working. Plain English answers preferred. Please do not just send me to websites. Thanks for help LanceCorporalJones

thanks, but neither of these replies help. I did read the HP site, several times, very carefully, and this is where you end up in trying to download the Vista driver for the HP Laserjet 4L h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00811676 and, as it says there: "At this time the driver will only be available on the Windows Vista operating system through the “Add a Printer” wizard. HP does not plan on placing this legacy driver on hp.com." the Add A Printer wizard will not install a working driver for my printer, despite several attempts, and the aid of online tech support. what's more - the microsoft communities email I received today alerting me to your replies contained links to blank pages???? again thanks for your time, but I still need a direct link to a working Vista driver for an HP Laserjet 4L. Did you ever get a answer to this question? I just purchased a new computer and the same thing is happening. It's not even a month old. Thank you ahead of time for your reply. "Lhynard" wrote:

I have tried the solutions in this newsgroup which have not worked. I have seen in other postings that disabling certain add-ins might resolve the issue. But my mouse does not work in the "Word Options" window, i.e. only the "Popular" tab works. Please help. gehara11

HI. Toshiba support is useless. All they will tell you is to update drivers, restart computer, uninstall camera, d/l drivers again, restart computer. |
